Just For Teachers!

by Dothan Education Foundation

To the teachers of Dothan City Schools,

We wanted to share a special announcement about a new program that the Dothan Education Foundation is excited to launch in the coming months. For the past year, our board has been working to determine the next step to expanding our mission of mobilizing resources towards a vision of quality education for our students.

With each and every discussion, our frame of reference always keeps coming back to you. We believe that you, our teachers, are the core to education and that along with students, you make the core of our city’s education system and community as a whole. Without the work that you do each and every day, Dothan would not be the place that citizens call home, businesses decide to locate and visitors come to spend time with family and friends.

It is our pleasure to announce the decision to open a free teacher supply store called the DEF CORE Store that will be available in early 2020 to support teachers. We wanted to go ahead and announce to begin to rally the troops in our community to support you and your work.

The CORE Store will be one that is free for teachers that qualify to shop and supported by partnerships for donated products.  Our new CORE Store will focus on needed CORE school supplies that are often spent to help supplement students in need such as the items that are requested on a school supply list. In the coming weeks, we will release more information about how to register, how to sign up for shopping times and how the center will operate.

Our Foundation is working to move to a new store front location with warehouse to be able to support donations year round and building essential partnerships locally, regionally and nationally. We want you to know that this is no small endeavor and may be filled with a few learning curves, but it is one that we are committed to.

We want to thank the 210 school survey respondents who told us that the majority of you are spending up to $600 out of your own pocket for needed supply items outside of the fee replacement money given each year. We’ve heard the countless stories of the sacrifices you make and the challenges you face to meeting supply needs and the outcome it has in the classroom.

We hope that you will work with us to allow us to start humble with a vision, develop and work out the policies and procedures for efficiency and give us time to develop the relationships for the supplies you need to eventually grow to a capacity that we have never dreamed of!

With this being said, we are going to need your help. We ask that you share the importance of this need with the community and join us as we continue to foster, what we believe, will be one of the greatest teacher support networks of any education foundation in our region. If you want to join a committee to help plan, let us know! We value your input.

As you may know, the Dothan Education Foundation is truly a grassroots organization that is not funded by state or federal funding and relies solely on community to carry out our mission by supporting innovation in the classroom, mobilizing supply resources and investing into quality education.

This October will be “Stock Our Shelves Month.” Participating businesses are hosting supply drives and events all month long in celebration of our new program. We know this new adventure is a great leap of faith and a lot of work, but we believe that it is important. We have a jam-packed year planned with events and drives that you don’t want to miss.

Today, we give you this promise- we will continue to work for you because you do so much for us. You are our CORE, the center of why we do and what we do.

Together in Partnership,

Lindsey Fountain, Executive Director
